The Last Sahabi to die

Shaykh al-Suyooti (rahimahullah) says in his Tadreeb ar Raawee:

وآخرهم أي الصحابة موتا مطلقا أبو الطفيل عامر بن واثلة الليثي مات سنة مائة من الهجرة قاله مسلم في صحيحه ورواه الحاكم في المستدرك عن خليفة بن خياط

The last Companion Alive The last of the companions to die is Abu at Tufayl, ‘Aamir ibn Waathilah al-Laythee. He died in the year 106 H. Muslim stated this in his Saheeh and al Hakim narrated it in ‘Al Mustadrak’ on the authority of Khaleefah ibn Khayyaat.

وقال خليفة في غير رواية الحاكم أنه تأخر بعد المائة وقيل مات سنة اثنتين ومائة قاله مصعب بن عبد الله الزبيري وجزم ابن حبان وابن قانع وأبو زكريا بن منده أنه مات سنة سبع ومائة

Khaleefah stated in other than al Haakim’s narration that he lived passed the year 100 H. and Mus’ab ibn ‘Abdullaah az Zubayree said that he died in the year 102 H. Ibn Hibbaan, ibn Qaani’, and Abu Zakariyyah ibn Mandah stated that he died in the year 107 H.

وقال وهب بن جرير بن حازم عن أبيه كنت بمكة سنة عشر ومائة فرأيت جنازة فسألت عنها فقالوا هذا أبو الطفيل

Wahb ibn Jareer ibn Haazim narrated on the authority of his father that he said; “I was in Makkah in the year 110 H. and I saw a Janaazah (funeral and) I asked about it and they told me it was Abu Tufayl (radiallah anhu).”

أنبأنا أَبُو علي الحداد . ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ عَبْد الملك بن عَبْد اللَّهِ المغربي عنه ، أنا أَبُو نعيم الحافظ ، نا أحمد بن إسحاق ، قَالَ : سمعت أحمد بن عمرو البزار ، نا نصر بن علي ، قَالَ : سمعت وهب بن جرير ، يقول : سمعت أبي ، يقول : كنت بمكة سنة عشر ومائة ، فرأيت جنازة ، فسألت عنها ، فقالوا : هذا أَبُو الطفيل .

[Tareekh Dimashq li Ibn `Asaakir > حرف العين; ذكر من اسمه عامر] Another route comes from Al-Haafidh Abu Nu`aym Al-Asbahaani in his book Ma`rifat al-Sahâba wa Fadâ’ilihim (“Knowing the Companions and Their Merits”) which is :

حَدَّثَنَاهُ حَدَّثَنَاهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ بُنْدَارٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَحْمَدَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو الْبَزَّارَ ، ثنا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، سَمِعْتُ وَهْبَ بْنَ جَرِيرٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ أَبِي ، يَقُولُ : ” كُنْتُ بِمَكَّةَ سَنَةَ عَشْرَةٍ وَمِائَةٍ ، فَرَأَيْتُ جِنَازَةً ، فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْهَا ، فَقَالُوا : هَذَا أَبُو الطُّفَيْلِ ” ، حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ الزُّهْرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ ، وَالْوَلِيدُ بْنُ جَمِيعٍ ، وَابْنُ خَيْثَمٍ ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ جُدْعَانَ ، وَجَابِرٌ الْجُعْفِيُّ ، وَالْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْحُرِّ ، وَالْجُرَيْرِيُّ وَحَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، وَجَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ، وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، وَمَعْرُوفُ بْنُ خَرَّبُوذَ ، وَسَيْفُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ .

And both the above chains are Saheeh.

Further Al-Suyooti continues:

وآخرهم قبله أنس عشر وأما كونه آخر الصحابة موتا مطلقا فجزم به مسلم ومصعب الزبيري وابن منده والمزي في آخرين وفي صحيح مسلم عن أبي الطفيل
رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وما على وجه الأرض رجل رآه غيري

The last of the companions before him to die was Anas [ibn Maalik]. As for him [Abu at Tufayl] being the last of the companions to die, then this was affirmed by Muslim, Mus’ab az Zubayree, Ibn Mandah, al Mizzee and others. In Saheeh Muslim on the authority of Abu at Tufayl who said:

“I saw the Messenger of Allaah – صلى الله عليه وسلم – and there is no one left on the face of the earth who saw him other than me.”

Shaikh Uthaimeen, may Allaah have mercy on him said, “The last of all of the Companions to die was ’Aamir ibn Waathilah al-Laithi in the year 110 AH. The last of them to die in Medinah was Mahmood ibn ar-Rabi’ in 99 AH. In Damascus, Syria, the last of them to die was Waathilah ibn al-Asqa’ in 86 AH. The last of them to pass away in Basrah was Anas ibn Maalik in 93 AH. In Homs it was ’Abdullaah ibn Busr al-Maazini in 98 AH; in Kufah, ’Abdullaah ibn Abi Awfaa al-Aslami in 87 AH and the last of them to pass away in Egypt was ’Abdullaah ibn al-Haarith in 89 AH.” [May Allaah be pleased with them all]
